Appliance knobs are rotary controls used on gas stoves, gas hobs, ovens, cookers and other household appliances. For an OEM or ODM project, the part has to do more than match the front-panel style. It must fit the control shaft, clear surrounding components, show the selected setting clearly and suit the required material and finish.
This guide covers the main decisions behind an appliance knob specification. It is written for buyers, product engineers and teams working from a drawing, sample or early design brief.
Quick answer
Start with the appliance function and the mating shaft. Then confirm the knob dimensions, panel clearance, material, finish and indicator requirement. A drawing or sample, together with target quantity and acceptance criteria, gives a supplier enough information to review an existing model or a custom option.
What appliance knobs do
An appliance knob transfers a user’s turning action to the appliance control. Depending on the product, it may operate a burner, temperature setting, timer, mode selector or another rotary function. The outside shape is visible to the user, while the internal shaft interface determines whether the knob fits the appliance control.
The same broad category includes gas stove knobs, cooker knobs, oven control knobs and other rotary appliance controls. Their requirements differ with the appliance function and panel layout.
Common appliance knob applications
Gas stoves and gas hobs
Burner-control knobs need to match the appliance shaft and the front-panel layout. The off position, indicator direction and clearance to neighbouring controls should be checked before a model is selected. See gas stove and cooker knobs for application-based references.
Ovens and cookers
Oven knobs may be used for temperature, timer or mode selection. The requested scale, icons and panel markings should be considered with the knob profile and orientation. See oven control knobs for related models.
Other household appliances
Other rotary appliance controls may need the same checks: shaft fit, dimensions, appearance and clear operating reference. Browse appliance knob applications for gas stove, gas hob, built-in oven, mini oven and mini home appliance use cases.
Confirm the shaft interface first
The shaft interface is the most important fit check. Outside diameter alone does not show whether a knob will work with an appliance. A D-shaft, round shaft, splined shaft, double-flat shaft, insert or another interface must match the mating control.
Ask for or measure:
- Shaft profile
- Diameter or across-flat dimensions
- Available shaft length and insertion depth
- Any insert, adapter or fixing feature
- Required knob orientation at the off position
A shaft drawing is best. If that is not available, send the removed knob and a mating-shaft sample, or clear photos with measured dimensions. For more detail, read gas stove knob shaft interfaces.
Define the knob envelope and panel clearance
Once the interface is known, confirm the space around the control. Record the knob diameter, overall height, bore depth and clearance to nearby knobs, displays, handles or the appliance door. A knob may fit the shaft but still create an assembly or usability problem if it conflicts with the front panel.
For a new appliance, include a front-panel drawing or a marked reference photo. It helps show the required knob profile, indicator position and available space.
Choose the material from the actual requirement
Material selection should follow the design, appliance application and required appearance. It should also be checked against the shaft interface and proposed finish.
- Zinc alloy can be reviewed when a project requires a die-cast metal knob and metal appearance.
- Aluminum alloy is another metal option when the proposed geometry, finish or shaft-fit requirements differ.
- Engineering plastics such as ABS, Bakelite, PBT and PA6 can be reviewed when they suit the application and design requirements.
For model references, browse zinc alloy appliance knobs, aluminum alloy appliance knobs and plastic appliance knobs.
If the project is deciding between zinc alloy and aluminum alloy, see zinc alloy vs aluminum alloy knobs. The article provides a comparison framework without treating either material as a default answer.
Specify finish, grip and markings together
The finish affects the visible design, but it also has to work with the material and marking method. State the requested colour, gloss, texture, brush direction or plated appearance with a sample or visual reference. Specify the indicator line, dot, icon, scale, logo or printing detail at the same time.
Grip details should be described in practical terms. If the knob needs knurling, a brushed area, a textured surface or another tactile feature, show its location on the drawing. A request for an “ergonomic” knob does not define the shape or the finish well enough for a production review.

Use a complete OEM selection checklist
Before requesting a quotation or sample review, prepare:
- Appliance type and control function
- Shaft drawing, dimensions or mating sample
- Required knob diameter, height, bore depth and panel clearance
- Material direction and surface-finish reference
- Indicator, icon, scale, logo or printing requirements
- Drawing, sample or marked photographs
- Acceptance criteria, estimated quantity and target schedule

FAQ
Can a knob be selected from its outside diameter?
No. The shaft profile, dimensions, insertion depth and orientation need to be checked first. Similar-looking knobs can have different internal interfaces.
Can an existing model be used for a new appliance?
An existing model can be a starting reference. Its shaft fit, dimensions, markings, material and finish still need to be reviewed against the new appliance.
What should an OEM buyer send for a project review?
Send the appliance application, control function, drawing or sample, shaft information, dimensions, target appearance, estimated quantity and acceptance criteria.
Request a project review
For drawing- or sample-based requirements, visit custom appliance knob manufacturing. Send the application, shaft information, dimensions and requested appearance through the contact page so the project can be reviewed before quotation.
